BILL TRAYLOR
Valérie Rousseau and Debra Purden
Foreword by Margit Rowell
The twelve hundred works that African-American artist Bill Traylor (1853-1949) created late in his life—mainly between 1939 and 1942—convey a singular storytelling ethos with complex layers of references to slavery, oppression under Jim Crow laws, and the characteristics of the black enclase of Montgomery, Alabama, where he established his outdoor working space. Richly illustrated with more than one hundred works from public and priate collections, this book provides a unique examination of Traylor's mythology, narratives, and cinematic vision, formed of condensed temporalities and repeated iconography.
